Eat pea shoots and leaves

We eat salad all year round in our house, so we get through many bags of prepared salad leaves. Baby leaves, rocket and pea shoots are yummy but can be expensive and wasteful if use by dates are missed. So as it is super easy, I have already started growing my cut and come again lettuce, with some already harvested and eaten. In addition this year, I decided to grow some pea shoots to improve our salad mix.

I had read that it is possible and much cheaper to grow pea plants using dried peas intended for cooking. So I bought a box for 50p (which is a quarter of the price of regular seeds) and used a 1/3 of the packet. So, so far so good.

I soaked them in water overnight until they looked like proper peas again.

Then filled a seed tray with compost, To make sure the compost is good and wet I stood the tray in water until the compost had up soaked as much water as possible. Then covered the soil, completely with a layer of the peas, leaving only a small gap between each one. A layer of compost on top, a little watering and the planting was complete.

I placed the tray on my sunny kitchen window and two days later the first shoots were appearing.

After a week the shoots were pushing up the soil.

By the third week they were ready to harvest.

Thoroughly Modern Tilly’s Garden

The minimal, modern style garden is nearly complete, big change from the garden of last spring.  Tilly the Cockapoo, has certainly made her mark in our garden, the lawn laid in the autumn couldn’t cope with our playful puppy, so dog friendly artificial turf seemed the perfect answer.
The planting kept simple, herbs, salad and veg okay for our furry friend to chew. The front garden, is now home to the cottage garden plants that need to be out of her way!

A Modern and Mediterranean garden

New look garden 3

Tilly our Cockapoo, has certainly made her mark in our garden. The lawn laid in the autumn looks very dog tired, so a new approach was needed.
All the cottage style plants have been relocated to the front garden and a modern, mediterranean feel with simple planting of dog friendly herbs are the way forward.

The greenhouse has been obscured by a black moroccan style screen, I am loving the patterns created in the shadow.

The apples trees have been replaced by an single olive tree and the lawn will be replaced next week with dog friendly artificial grass.

The Sweet Peas “Blue Velvet’ in the front garden were definitely the stars this year, masses of long, straight and highly perfumed blooms.

In the back garden the Everlasting Sweet Peas have produced very pretty pale pink flowers, unscented of course but free from the greenfly which have once again blighted the rest.

Tilly meets Ruby

So Tilly met our friend’s Flat Coated Retriever Ruby this weekend.  It was a timid start, but given Ruby is pretty huge and about six times Tilly’s weight, our little superstar was very brave and quite bold.

After some cautious fancy footwork where Tilly managed to keep something (table, chair, person or washing basket) between her and Ruby at all times, things ended up with the pair laying happily side by side. Tilly even sneaked a quick lick of Ruby’s bone!

More fun to come once Tilly’s second vaccination is completed and she can start tagging along on walks, even if she needs to be carried for some of it.
